Every Minecon, a new cape is given to attendees. The image above shows them chronologically: 2011 Vegas, 2012 Paris, 2013 Orlando, and now, 2015 London! The new cape has a darker greenish-blue hue than the 2013 cape, and sports the iron golem's ever-watchful gaze. Expect to see these capes around very soon!

As if that wasn't enough, Mojang is releasing a free bundle of skins for both Sony and Microsoft consoles. This pack is extra-special because it features Alex and Steve wearing a selection of smart capes.

The Minecon 2015 Skin Pack will be available for just 15 days from the 1st of July onward. You can get it from Xbox Live Marketplace/PSN, be sure to grab it before it disappears! IT IS A LIMITED TIME PACK!

1.9: Still a Lot To Do

Even now, 1.9 is seeing changes in development. As one example: quivers were planned to be added in the new update, but were recently pulled.

Dinnerbone:

This is an example of how non-final the things I've been working on are: I'm removing quivers again. Arrows in off-hand feels more natural.

The amount of arrows held would not change - still a stack, as it has always been - though the bow would prioritize firing arrows in the off-hand before ones stored in the inventory. Having a quiver serve this function was deemed more complicated than necessary, as holding the arrows would take less time than constantly re-arranging them into a quiver, and would provide something of a visual cue on what arrows the player was about to fire, among other things. Will the quiver see a return? Time will tell, even if it technically never saw the light of day.

On the other hand, OSX users have reason to rejoice: Johan Bernhardsson - formerly working on Pocket Edition - is now fully devoted to producing the OSX launcher for Minecraft! Expect more news on this soon!

LittleBigPlanet Meets PS Minecraft

A brand-new mash-up pack featuring Sackboy, Sackgirl OddSock, Toggle, Swoop and many more, is on its way to Minecraft on PlayStation. Mash-up packs are essentially the PlayStation version of a resource pack, letting you change up how the game looks with new skins, textures, music, and more. This one lets you LittleBigPlanet-ify your Minecraft world with resources from Media Molecule’s popular game. It even comes with a pre-built landscape and some catchy tunes taken straight from the game. What more could a Little Big Minecrafter possibly want?

Expect the LBP pack to become available July 1st, for £3.29/€3.99!

Free Updates For All (Consoles)!

Free updates? FREE?! Yes - free updates! On July 1st, all console versions of Minecraft will be updated to version 1.17/TU25/CU14 , bringing a heap of exciting tweaks and additions. Here are a few highlights:

  • Offended by mountains and caverns? Worry not, strange crafter, because now you have the option to customise your super flat worlds so they’re only as vertical as you desire.

  • New blocks! Oak, Spruce, Birch, and Jungle wood types. Fences, Gates, and Doors! Create the log cabin of your dreams with 1.17/TU25/CU14 .

  • A heap of new game options! Change the game mode, difficulty, time, player spawn position, ambient cave sounds, and weather without leaving your game session. Very handy.

  • Classic crafting! Now console players get to craft items just like their PC buddies on Java Minecraft. Some players find this style of creation more satisfying. Check it out.

  • New stuff! Iron Trapdoors, Inverted Daylight Sensors, Book & Quills, and Stained Glass have arrived. Use them wisely, and for good, please.

Late last year, Telltale Games made an announcement about a story-driven Minecraft game, called Story Mode. The announcement wasn't especially detailed, though it did note some important deviations from Minecraft proper - it would not be an expansion of, or directly played from, Minecraft itself - but beyond that, not much else was said. Now, it seems they are ready to share more at Minecon this weekend! What do we know so far about Story Mode?

  • Minecraft: Story Mode will be a narrative-driven video game created by Telltale Games. It will be about Minecraft.

  • Mojang is collaborating with Telltale and members of the community to make Minecraft: Story Mode as "Minecrafty" as possible.

  • The first episode will be released some time in 2015, and will be available on Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices.

  • Minecraft: Story Mode will be released episodically, just like The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, or the recent Tales from the Borderlands, which is another developer-collaboration series between Telltale Games and Gearbox Software.

Telltale Games has a pretty solid history with story-driven games, though it remains to be seen what story they will tell with Minecraft. What do you think the story will be?

While 1.9 will not be seeing a full release at Minecon, Dinnerbone went on to say that snapshots would begin during (or shortly after) Minecon, something that will likely be a relief to many. One of the larger complaints by the community has been the inability to test for bugs, but not to worry! Snapshots will be coming very soon.

If you are planning to attend Minecon, having your hands on the official guidebook will be really handy! Even if you are not going, it has a wealth of information about the convention, including exhibitors, panelists, and activities, just to name a few!

One reason cited with not releasing an entire update at a major convention was a look back to 2011, when Minecraft officially launched as 1.0 on-stage at Vegas. The number of things that could go wrong is fairly high, and it seemed more prudent to make sure 1.9 is the best it can be, and release it that way.

TeacherGaming (team behind MinecraftEdu) and Dan200 (creator of ComputerCraft) bring you a clever new way to learn programming and computational thinking in Minecraft. Players start with a tile-based interface to learn the fundamentals of programming in a fun, accessible environment. From there, you have to find ways to use turtles to automate and extend your usual Minecraft doings (Mining, building, etc). Whether you are completely new to programming or you already have some experience, ComputerCraftEdu is an easy and fun way to learn important real world skills and get creative on a whole new level. Awesome new robot servants AND useful real-life skills? It's like sorcery, but with programming!

...okay, programming isn't literally sorcery, but still.

Do I need to know any programming to play?

No. The idea behind ComputerCraftEdu is to give you an easy start to understanding the structures and logic behind programming. You start by controlling your robot turtle with a remote by giving simple one-step commands. You’ll start actual programming by dragging and dropping commands to a grid area and gradually move to placing those blocks by just using the keyboard and finally to write the actual code with just text.

Do I need some specific version of Minecraft?

Like regular ComputerCraft, ComputerCraftEdu is Forge-based on Minecraft 1.7.10, and therefore requires Forge to work. A 1.8 version is coming in the future, though!

If you'd like to learn more about ComputerCraftEdu, and get your hands on some sweet downloads, click here!

Watch events, panels, and more LIVE at the official livestream!

Highlights:

  • Opening Ceremony

  • Minecraft Windows 10 Announced

  • Telltale Games' "Minecraft: Story Mode" trailer reveal

Minecon is now fully up and running! Highlights from today (Day 1) will be posted right here, including 1.9 info, awesome panels, and more. Keep an eye open, there will be some big news today!

 Opening Ceremony:

The ceremony opened up with a clever villager short by Element Animation, as the villagers arrive in London, and get into all sorts of trouble. The animation was playing on a massively wide screen, taking up the entire stage. Shortly after, Lydia introduced a Guinness spokesperson, who presented an award for Minecon for 10,000 tickets sold, the largest convention held for a single video game.

A representative from the U.N. followed shortly after, presenting a short film explaining "Block by Block", the Minecraft project that lets players re-design real-world areas, then fund those projects to be realized in real life. Minecraft Stop-Motion Movie creator was shown afterwards, and looked pretty promising! Shown on an iPad, it appeared to be an app that allowed the user to create stop-motion animations with Minecraft models. It was also revealed that 17 VIPs from Make-A-Wish (and similar) chose Minecon as their wish, and were in attendance. HoloLens made an appearance, as the E3 demonstration was shown on stage as well. Afterwards, the HoloLens lead developer and Jeb came on stage, and announced that 25 attendees would be able to test out the HoloLens first-hand on Sunday. Expect updates on that tomorrow! Jeb went on to say that Mojang would be discussing both the 1.9 Combat Update, and Pocket Edition features, in panels later in the 'con.

Next up was a look at Telltale Games' "Minecraft: Story Mode". The visuals were strongly reminiscent of Minecraft animations from alums like Slamacow, and showed a number of dramatically tense scenes. More to follow!

Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta Announced

UPDATE: Mojang clarifies a few points about Minecraft Win10:

  • Minecraft Win10 is C++, based on Pocket Edition, is not another version of Minecraft/not replacing the java version

  • No mods for now

  • Controller support

  • Xbox Live not required: 7-player limit is from Pocket Edition, no dedicated server currently

  • Free download for players who own the current PC version (java)

Owen Hill talks about the newest version of Minecraft:

Just like the first release of Minecraft all those years ago, this version will develop and evolve over time with the help of your feedback. That’s why it has “Beta” in the title - because it’s not quite finished, and will become even more fun over time. Just like the other versions of Minecraft, all future updates will be free. We spoil you. We really do.

If you’re one of the 20 million(!) players who have the PC edition of Minecraft (referred to by techy people as the Java version) you’ll be able to download Windows 10 Edition Beta from the Windows 10 store for free. Other players can get it for the paltry price of $10 during the beta period (the length of which is still being decided).

Minecraft is available on Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, and now, Windows 10. Not every version of Minecraft is exactly the same, but they all feature two distinct game modes – Creative and Survival – that cater to different types of players. All versions of Minecraft support multiplayer. Some new features you can expect:

Craft, create, and explore online with up to seven friends playing Windows 10 Edition Beta, through local multiplayer or with your Xbox Live friends online.

Play online and local multiplayer with other Pocket Edition players thanks to a free update, due to arrive soon after launch.

Support for multiple inputs - switch between controller, touch, and keyboard controls with little to no effort

Record and share gameplay highlights with built-in GameDVR.

Help shape the future of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta with built-in player feedback mechanisms

Chickens, zombies, pigs, boats, armed skeletons, potatoes, zombies, baby squids, enchantment tables, villagers, naked sheep, iron golems, potions, ghasts, pickaxes, carrots, and all the weird and wonderful goodness you’ve come to expect from Minecraft
